What is the importance of Religion and Theatre in SETC?

Many SETC members are interested in the intersection of faith and theatre. The religion and theatre committee provides a forum for discussion. Our goal is to create as inclusive an environment as possible, allowing a variety of perspectives on faith to be heard. In addition, drama ministry is the fastest growing sector of the theatre population. Providing a forum for discussion of issues relevant to this important venue will make our organization stronger. We’re especially interested in programming that expresses the broad range of spiritual experience among the SETC membership.
Who is involved in Religion and Theatre?
Those involved include young people beginning their professional careers, higher education faculty at church-related institutions and large state schools, senior adults committed to community theatre, church members involved in drama ministry, and theatre practitioners who profess no faith at all but are interested in issues of faith and theatre. People of all religious perspectives are as welcome as those with no religious views at all. Many SETC members have been enriched by thoughtful discussions about faith and theatre. Also, many members enjoy meeting people with similar religious or spiritual perspectives.

Program emphasis at the Annual Spring Convention:
The Religion and Theatre committee has presented programming on ethics in actor training, the history of the anti-theatrical prejudice in western culture, the ministry of the Black church through drama, performances of solo productions, basic playwriting, employment in non-traditional settings, theatre in the worship space, new plays that explore issues of faith, and much more. Recently one of our most influential programs explored the impact that the Roman theatre discovered in the Israeli town of Sepphoris might have on traditional understandings of Jesus.
