Annual Convention *
Over 400 workshops, demonstrations and panels, five theatre festivals, design
competitions, exhibits, auditions, job contact service, new play presentations, distinguished speakers, business meetings, awards banquet and networking opportunities.
Job Contact Service *
Connects employers to employees seeking offstage jobs in theatre. Offered year-round and at the Annual Convention where 110 theatre companies interview on site.
Spring Professional Auditions *
Over 800 actors seeking summer and/or year round employment audition for 100+ companies. Pre-professional actors qualify at one of the Southeast’s ten state screening auditions. Professionals apply directly.
Fall Professional Auditions *
Over 200 professional actors audition for 30+ companies. Held annually the Sunday and Monday following Labor Day.
Undergraduate Auditions *
Over 70 college, university and theatre training school representatives audition and interview acting and technical candidates at the Annual Convention.
Graduate Auditions – Spring and Fall *
Graduate school representatives from all over the United States audition and interview acting and technical candidates at the Annual Convention AND the first Saturday after Labor Day.
Festivals
Community Theatre - Ten theatres represent their respective states during a three-day festival at the Annual Convention. Biennial winners go to the National AACT Festival.
Fringe Festival - Productions from across the theatrical spectrum including professional, academic and community theatre are invited to participate.
Secondary School Theatre - Ten high schools represent their respective states during a two-day festival that presents, critiques and celebrates high school theatre.
Ten Minute Play - College students have 24 hours to audition, write, direct and produce five plays at the Annual Convention.
Theatre for Youth - Four select theatre companies are invited to perform for the convention host city youth, SETC conference attendees and prominent respondents.
Committees
Function year-round to inform members and help with convention program planning.
Education Expo
College, university and drama school representatives interview potential students for undergraduate and graduate theatre programs and scholarships in a college fair atmosphere during the Annual Convention.
Commercial Exhibits
The latest in technology and theatrical products on display from theatre suppliers, vendors and publishing houses during the Annual Convention.
Publications *
Southern Theatre - Renowned theatre magazine featuring articles on theatre in the southeast and beyond. The quarterly publication circulation includes members, libraries and special interest groups. Contact: Editor Deanna Thompson at deanna@setc.org
SETC News - Bi-monthly newsletter keeping members informed with organization updates.
Theatre Symposium - Annual publication of works of scholarship resulting from a single-topic meeting held on a southeastern university campus each spring.
Job Contact Bulletin - Theatre positions available throughout the country are posted on the SETC website with weekly email notice to members.
Awards and Scholarships
Design Awards - Twenty-one cash awards are given to student designers in costume, In honor of Irene Smart Rains; in scenery, sponsored by Sculptural Arts Coating; in lighting, sponsored by ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls); and The Crafts and Technology Award sponsored by PatternMaker Software.
New Play Project/Charles M. Getchell New Play Award - One winning script is selected from a southeastern playwright. Winner receives $1,000, staged reading and critique at Annual Convention, and is published in Southern Theatre magazine.
High School New Play Project - Awards $250 and a staged reading at the Annual Convention to a high school playwright.
Leighton Ballew Award - A cash award given to an entering graduate student studying directing; based on merit.
Robert Porterfield Award - A cash award given to an entering graduate student studying theatre; based on merit.
William E. Wilson Scholarship - Awarded to a southeastern resident high school teacher who has completed at least one year of teaching and is enrolled regionally for their masters in theatre or speech and theatre.
Polly Holliday Award - A cash award given to a secondary school senior who will be pursuing a degree in theatre; based on merit.
Secondary School Scholarship – A cash award given to a secondary school senior on entering a college or university in the SETC region to major in theatre.
Marian A. Smith Award – A cash award to a student pursuing a graduate degree in costume design and/or technology.
KEAP (Keynote Emerging Artists of Promise Awards) - A grant presented annually to four high school students who show promise in theatre and would benefit from a grant to attend the Annual Convention.
Sara Spencer Child Drama Award - Recognizes an individual or organization for distinct achievement in such areas of child drama as: playwriting, performance, audience development, curriculum development, funding, scholarship, community programs, research, television programming, creative drama or other enrichment programs within the SETC Region.
Festival Awards - Sponsored by Dramatist Play Service, William E. Wilson, and Nortcostco-Atlanta Costume.
