Rules:
The amount of the award is
$3,300, awarded to an undergraduate student who has been
accepted into a graduate program in directing.
- In order to apply for the Leighton M. Ballew
Directing Award, the applicant must:
- have completed their undergraduate work at a regionally accredited
institution within the SETC region no later than August of the year applying; and
- be entering graduate school in any region for the
first time or be currently enrolled in a graduate directing
program in a college or university in any region.
- Applications are due no
later than January
15th of each year.
- In order to receive the Leighton Ballew Directing Award,
the winner must:a) enter a regionally accredited graduate
school as a full-time MFA or PhD candidate;
and b) be duly enrolled during the summer or fall term
following the convention at which the award is announced
or be currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student.
- Up to three candidates may be selected based on their
replies and recommendations as candidates for the award.
These candidates will be notified prior to the convention.
- The selected candidates must be present at the SETC
Spring Convention for an interview with the committee.
The interview is the final step in selecting the winner
of the award.
- The winner of the Leighton M. Ballew Directing Award
will be announced and presented at the Awards Banquet
held Saturday evening of the SETC Spring Convention. The
recipient should be present at the banquet.
- Upon suitable notification (i.e. class schedule, proof
of registration, enrollment notification from the school
Registration Office) to the SETC Executive Director that
the candidate is enrolled in a regionally accredited program as
specified above, a check will be sent to the recipient
of the award. This process usually extends into July.
- The following information should be provided by all
applicants:

- Personal letter outlining plans and objectives for graduate work or internship.
- A complete resume, including work in stage management or play direction.
- Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three references who have agreed, at the
request of the award committee, to write letters recommending the applicant.
- Two or three letters of support from those who have seen my directing work (either
scene work or full productions).

F. Letter of acceptance by a regionally accredited graduate program in directing.

G. Complete transcripts - undergraduate and graduate.
