SETC Professional Screening Auditions

Are the SETC Professional Screening Auditions for me?

These preliminary auditions are for those actors who wish to participate in the Spring Professional Auditions at the annual SETC Convention but who do not yet meet all of the professional qualifications required.

Adults, senior citizens, and certain students* may register for SETC Screening Auditions. Please Note: Only a percentage of those participating in the Screening Auditions will be invited to advance to the Spring Professional Auditions held at the annual SETC Convention.

High school students are not eligible to participate in SETC Screening Auditions. Applicants must no longer be in high school (i.e. have graduated) and be at least 18 years of age at the time of their fall screening date. Please contact April Marshall for any questions regarding this policy.

All actors enrolled in undergraduate programs at the time of the SETC Professional Screening Auditions, whether or not they have earned a salary acting AND whether or not they have passed through  screenings in the past, must be passed from the Screening Auditions each year in order to participate in upcoming Spring Professional Auditions. Please contact April Marshall for any questions regarding this policy.

Graduate students in MFA Theatre Performance programs may apply directly to the Spring Professional Auditions, provided they meet all other professional requirements. Those who do not meet the requirements or who are not performance majors are required to attend the screenings. Please contact April Marshall for any questions regarding this policy.

The Screening Process

Actors and singers who don’t yet qualify as career professionals have the opportunity to secure an audition slot at the SETC Spring Professional Auditions by attending and advancing from an SETC Professional Screening Audition.

1.   Find Your Assigned Screening Site

Eleven states host SETC Professional Screening Auditions.

You must register for Screening Auditions based on either:

  • the state where you hold permanent residence
  • the state where you are currently enrolled in post-secondary school

Don’t live in or attend school in one of the host states? Don’t worry, just hover over your state on the map below to see your assigned audition state. Click the star on your host state for full details.

If you are unable to find your location or cannot make the audition to which you are assigned, contact April J’C Marshall well in advance of your deadline.

2.   Apply by Your State’s Deadline

Audition dates, registration deadlines and application fees vary by state. Click on your state above (or on the links to the right) for specific details and instructions regarding your assigned audition state. All applications open at Noon ET on Sept. 16, 2019.

3.   Prepare & Audition

You will receive your audition number and other information shortly after your state’s application deadline. Prepare as per the Official Guidelines. At the event, you will audition for a panel of adjudicators who will score your audition (Sample Scoring Form). Break a leg!

4.  Wait for Your Results

Wait to hear back from SETC regarding your Screening results. We’ll let you know whether or not you have been passed on to audition at our Spring Professional Auditions as soon as possible.

5. Register for SETC

If you are passed on to audition at the SETC Spring Professional Auditions, you must register for the SETC Convention and pay the spring audition fee by your assigned deadline.

The total cost of convention registration, SETC membership, and the spring audition fee will be: $175 for students and $275 for adults.*

* If you plan to register for other events such as the Theatre Job Fair, Graduate School Auditions, etc., you should also register for these at this time. Some activities may incur additional fees.

6.  Break a Leg at the SETC Spring Professional Auditions

Join us at the Spring Professional Auditions where you will audition for thousands of roles with 60-80 companies from across the nation. You will also have the chance to take in workshops, shows, networking events and more as part of the annual convention.

The 71st annual SETC Convention will be held Feb. 26 – March 1, 2020, in Louisville, KY. Audition dates are Feb. 27-29, 2020 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday). You will be assigned to one of those dates based on the block of availability for which you are eligible.

"This is an awesome opportunity that you provide for young aspiring actors. I happened to pass through the screenings . . . and . . . ended up getting a job with Flatrock Playhouse. It was the most educational, inspiring and self-defining summer I have ever experienced."
