Part-Time with an average of 25 hours a week

South Carolina Children’s Theatre (SCCT) is a growing non-profit organization with an annual budget of
$1,560,000 located in Greenville, SC. For more than 35 years, SCCT has served approximately 30,000
young people and their families annually with its mission: to empower and inspire a new generation of
changemakers through theatre. Programs include performances and special events, theatre classes, on -
site residencies, school tours, and outreach programs for under-estimated communities. It is an exciting
time to join SCCT as the organization recently completed a $14.45M capital campaign to build its own
theatre complex in downtown Greenville, allowing programs and administrative staff to grow
significantly.

Position overview:
The Part-Time Carpenter supports the Technical Director and production team in the construction,
installation, and maintenance of scenic elements for South Carolina Children’s Theatre productions and
events. This position plays a key role in bringing scenic designs to life by fabricating, assembling, and
organizing materials and scenic components. The ideal candidate is a skilled problem-solver with strong
carpentry abilities, creativity in working with non-traditional materials, and a proactive approach to
maintaining an efficient and organized shop environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Construct, install, and strike scenic elements for all SCCT productions, events, and educational
programming.
Interpret and execute construction drawings, ground plans, and shop sketches under the
supervision of the Technical Director.
Fabricate scenery using wood, metal, plastics, foam, fabric, and other non-traditional materials.
Exercise creative problem-solving to determine effective construction methods for unique
scenic designs.
Operate standard shop tools safely and efficiently, including saws, drills, sanders, pneumatic
tools, and welding equipment (if qualified).
Manage and organize the scene shop, ensuring tools, hardware, and materials are stored
properly and in working order.
Maintain accurate shop inventory, track material usage, and communicate supply needs to the
Technical Director. Assist with material procurement, including running errands, picking up supplies, and making
lumber or materials deliveries as needed.
Load and unload trucks and assist with transporting scenic elements between venues.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment; adhere to SCCT’s health and safety standards.
Collaborate positively with the production team, designers, and volunteers to ensure timely and
quality completion of projects.
Participate in strike, storage, and repurposing of scenic materials at the close of each production.
Occasionally assist with special projects, facility maintenance, or educational programming
support.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Prior experience in theatrical carpentry or scenic construction
Ability to read and interpret construction and scenic design drawings
Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in fast-paced production environments
Proficiency with standard woodworking tools and basic mechanical systems
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work at heights up to 25 feet using ladders or lifts
Flexible schedule including evenings and weekends during production periods
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for errands and deliveries
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency with driving 26’ box truck
Welding and basic rigging experience
Familiarity with scenic automation, pneumatics, and stage hardware
Experience with finish carpentry
Experience managing shop inventory and maintaining production equipment
Experience working in educational or youth theatre environments
Scissor lift operation
