Position Title: Technical Director

Reports to: Executive Director

Employment Type:  Full-Time

Location: Limelight Theatre, Saint Augustine, FL

Position Summary:

The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of theatrical productions and events at our community theatre. This position ensures that sets, lighting, sound, props, and backstage operations are executed safely, efficiently, and to a high artistic standard, while staying within budget and schedule. The TD works closely with directors, designers, crew, and volunteers to bring productions to life, supporting both artistic vision and practical constraints.

Key Responsibilities:

Production Management
- Coordinate and supervise all technical elements for productions, including scenic construction, lighting, sound, projections, special effects, and rigging.
- Interpret set, lighting, and sound designs to develop production plans and schedules.
- Source, rent, or purchase materials and equipment needed for productions while staying within budget.
- Ensure smooth load-ins, technical rehearsals, performances, and strikes.

Collaboration & Leadership
- Serve as the main liaison between production teams, designers, stage management, and theatre administration.
- Recruit, train, and supervise technical crew, volunteers, and overhire labor.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and safe working environment.

Safety & Maintenance
- Maintain the theatre's technical equipment (lighting instruments, sound systems, tools, rigging, etc.).
- Implement and enforce safety protocols for all technical work.
- Oversee maintenance of scenic and prop storage areas.

Budget & Scheduling
- Prepare and manage technical production budgets in collaboration with theatre leadership.
- Create and maintain build, tech, and strike schedules to meet production deadlines.

Qualifications:

- Technical theatre experience, preferably in a community or regional theatre setting.
- Proficiency in scenic construction, lighting systems, sound systems, and theatrical rigging.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to lead a team and work effectively with diverse groups of people.
- Comfort working with both professionals and volunteers of varying skill levels.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for productions.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in elevated spaces.
- Manual dexterity with tools and technical equipment.

Preferred Skills (not required but a plus):

- CAD drafting or other design software experience.
- Experience with LED lighting technology and sound editing software.
- Knowledge of projection systems.
